Siblings

by Mary Joyce Johnson

"Now you're in trouble, you really blew it!"
"It's not my fault, I didn't do it!"
"You can't blame me, you started it first!"
"In this whole family, I like you worst!"
"Get out of my room and stay away,
I don't want to see you and I don't want to play!"
"You're so lazy, it just isn't fair.
I always have to work more than my share."

Sometimes they're buddies, loyal and true.
Then five minutes later, right out of the blue
They're fussing and fighting and taunting each other.
And driving the wits right out of their mother.
But when I intervene to figure it out
They just look at me with a silly old pout,
"But, Mom," they grin, "we were just having fun!"
Well it's not fun to me, my nerves are undone.
For they're filling our home with dissonant sound
And turning it into a fierce battleground.

But don't you despair, I've found the solution.
The answer is simple - outside persecution!
Just let an outsider come pick a fight
And those sibling rivals will quickly unite.
It's one for all and all for one,
They stick like glue till the victory's won.

Ah...The peace is lovely, I cherish it . . . then
They're fussing and feuding and fighting again.

But before we get pompous and think kids are odd.
Remember, we're siblings in the family of God.
And I certainly hope that our Father above
Doesn't look down at us and see that kind of love.
