It turned out to be a wet and stormy evening. Being in an open air ball park, we got pretty soaked from the showers. I became concerned that my iPhone would get wet in my pocket so I gave it to my wife to put in her purse for safe keeping. We left the game early in a downpour. When we got home, I asked her where she put her purse so I could retrieve my iPhone. She started to panic when she couldn't find it. It must have been dropped by the car in the parking lot. The purse contained everything you would expect including both of our phones. My first fear was that someone was going to get my personal information off of my iPhone. So I quickly logged into my .me account and performed a remote wipe of my iPhone. It would have been nice to be able to locate it with the "Find my iPhone" feature but I had never turned it on.

Fortunately, there are still many kind and honest people in this world and we received a phone message that arrived via email (a feature of our Vonage home phone service) from a woman who found the purse sitting in a puddle beside her car as she was leaving the game. (Thanks so much Cheryl). She informed us that she was leaving it with the stadium police who would hold it for us. As we rushed back down to the stadium in an ongoing downpour, I was appreciating the cool features of the iPhone and anticipating an easy restoration of my data of which I had just made a recent backup. When we finally got the purse and inspected my phone, I was surprised to see that not only was my phone wiped of all personal data, but the only thing it displayed was the Apple logo and it would not turn off! When we got home I plugged it into my MacBook to begin the restoring process. Nothing happened. By then my phone's battery was dead and all I saw was a dim charging icon. After about 10 minutes charging, the Apple logo came back but nothing else. The phone didn't show up as a device in iTunes. I tried to turn it off and on again multiple times but still nothing. Doing a google search on the subject led me to a couple of posts where people found the remote wipe action nearly bricked their phones. There wasn't much to be found that explained clearly how to get past where my phone was stuck. So trying different sequences of holding the power button and home button, I finally was able to get the screen to display the icon instructing me to plug the phone into the computer to restore from back up and the process began. As I recall, the sequence was 1.) Power down. 2.) Power up and hold the home button until the Apple logo changes to the plug into iTunes icon. After that it was a short amount of time until my iPhone was completely restored.

I am thrilled with the iPhone and all the well-thought-through features. The only downside of the experience was that I was very close to having to upgrade to the 3GS version and will have to wait out my AT&T contract on my first generation iPhone. "Just kidding, honey!"

Me on a Boss Hoss

via tweetree.com

This is the Boss Hoss I just got to ride at Chopper City Sports Boss Hoss Power Tour. One reason is because my wife took me to see the new Pixar movie, UP in digital 3D. She knows that I am a Pixar fan and a kid at heart and that I love all the Pixar movies. I also have dabbled in 3D for years. I even have a 3D photo app on my iPhone. I can't believe that I haven't gone to see a movie in digital 3D until now. Up! was the perfect movie for this technology. The clarity and detail were stunning. The story line was packed with emotion. My wife actually was crying in a couple parts. It did seem a little scary in places for younger children so take that under advisement. We were thoroughly entertained and highly recommend going to see UP. Be prepared to duck when stuff flies out at you. The 3D effects were very realistic and added incredible depth. You will be impressed. The glasses were comfortable and even fit over my own glasses which added to the clarity. I think it would be nice if theatres would charge less the next time I go to digital 3D movie if I bring this pair of glasses. It would be a very "green" thing to do. I'll try that next time.

I won't go into the storyline of the movie as there are many other excellent reviews. I just wanted to give the movie my two thumbs UP!

Trikking the Dakota Rail Trail

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ov8KxTqPtAc/SiSYcJ5jbJI/AAAAAAAAAx8/acxI1N1aSd4/s320/P1030467.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342562667429325970" />
Today Mary Joyce and I trikked the Dakota Rail Trail from Wayzata to Saint Bonifacius and back again for a total of 26 miles, our first Trikke marathon. The sites and sounds around the Lake Minnetonka area were soothing to the soul.

As is our habit when we Trikke, I brought a handful of business cards to give to folks who ask us about our Trikkes. And as usual, we stopped frequently to entertain questions. I gave out all the cards I had. Everyone comments how fun it looks and asks "What do you call those?"

One of our favorite stops was at the Minnetonka Drive In owned by Dave and his wife. This 50 year old drive-in is right out of the 50's and a favorite hangout for drivers of old classic cars and 50's music. The food is great. We highly recommend that if you go experience the Dakota Rail Trail, you must stop at the Minnetonka Drive In to make it complete.

The Dakota Rail Trail was completed last year and has it's grand-opening festivities scheduled for June 20. (See article from Minneapolis Star Tribune)

I think we were very lucky to have this opportunity to enjoy the Dakota Rail Trail when we did. I understand that the weekends are very, very busy. Someone said it's like driving on 394 during the rush hour. I hope it's not that bad. We had it pretty much to ourselves today. I don't think that will happen often. This is going to be a very popular destination for biking, trikking, roller blading, running and walking. It is definitely one of our favorites.

Video Tweets with Tweetie, Audio Tweets with TweetMic and an unusual twist (of the dial) with Reportage!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 204px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ov8KxTqPtAc/Sh9M3TJo3BI/AAAAAAAAAxc/i9en_8qu6io/s320/Picture+1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341072196001913874" />
This has been an eventful week in the Twitterverse. Last night I was surprised to be alerted to an upgrade to Tweetie for Mac that included, of all things, a new video tweet feature. "How cool is that!" was my first outburst. I couldn't wait to try it out. So I sent a few out to one of my Twitter followers who just happened to have a Mac or two. He responded by downloading it and sending me a couple video tweets. As far as I can tell, you don't have any video length limits. The upload times were short and if there is any conversion happening, it is quite quick. I will definitely be using this new feature. Tweetie for Mac OS and iPhone are one of my favorite and most used apps.

I also ran across an audio tweet app for my iPhone called TweetMic. I had been dabbling in a program for iPhone called AudioBoo which works very well but seems to be a closed network that doesn't share with other social media like Twitter. Now, with TweetMic I can post quick little audio messages on Twitter. The app is very clean and the audio is very high quality. It does seem to take a long time to upload the file even on a WiFi network. Hopefully that will improve in future updates.

Today I downloaded another Twitter app called Reportage by WhereCloud which changes the Twitter viewing paradigm to that of a radio. Imagine each twitter user you follow as a radio station. Like some radios, you can have your favorite stations saved in a preset of some kind or just tune the entire dial. With Reportage, you start viewing your friends as a grid of photos that indicate how many unread tweets they have since you last viewed them. Click on one and the images drop down to the bottom of the screen in what appears to be a linear radio dial with the selected friends tweets displayed above. Scroll the gallery of user images at the bottom of the screen until the one you want falls into the dial window and up pops their tweet stream. You also have the option to make a friend a favorite which is like having your favorite radio station in a preset. Tap on favorites and only those friends that you have marked as favorites show up in the radio dial. This app does the basic things that the other Twitter apps do but just with a different twist and fewer clicks. I do wish that they had a search feature that would create additional channel icons in the display to follow hashtag subjects or general search criteria. I wouldn't be surprised if something like that shows up somewhere down the dial.

All in all, this has been a pretty exciting week for developments around Twitter. What will it be next week. Things are changing so fast.

Trikking is a Family Affair

After seeing how excited our grandkids have been about Trikking, we started to look for used Trikkes. Funny thing, but the day after our son brought his kids over to try out the Trikkes, he saw one a block away from his home at a garage sale on his way to work. By the time he got back to check it out, the sale was closed for the day. So we went over this morning to check it out and ended up buying a used T8 for $50. We did a little wheeling and dealing to get it down from $100. So this afternoon we went Trikking with Clark (our grandson) and played some follow the leader. He is a natural at the Trikke technique, as are most of our grandkids, and he kept up with us very well and even led part of the way. We had to make a video to capture the memories. The used T8 is a couple of years old and has the poly wheels. Not a bad deal.

Added 1 Grandson to the Trikke Family

We found an older model T8 Trikke at a garage sale today and bought it for our son's family. Our daughter, Julie, (Addie's mom) sang this very song when she was a little girl so this was a special treat for both mothers on this special day. Needless to say, most mother's eyes were leaking some "moisture". (that's for you, Julie).

Addie sang loud and true at North Bay Community Church in Superior, Wisconsin and I have embedded it here in honor of all mothers out there who raise precious children of confidence and promise. MJ and I came up to spend Mother's Day weekend with them and hear their oldest sing a special number in church on Sunday morning and MJ(grandma) is playing piano for her. In spite of the rainy and cold weather predicted for the weekend, we brought our Trikkes with us to show the kids. They have been watching our earlier videos and have expressed interest in what it is we have been doing.

One of their favorite spots to ride bikes and walk with the girls is a beautiful cemetery close to their home. Things were drying out so off we headed to Trikke in the cemetery! Our daughter has done some in-line skating in the past to it didn't take her too long to figure out the Trikke and get in the sweet spot. Her girls are a little small to Trikke alone on our T78s so we assisted them and they got the feel of what it's like to ride a Trikke.

Check out this newly posted video of our fun afternoon with some wonderful grandkids!

16 Mile Trikke Trek

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 229px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ov8KxTqPtAc/Sf4kW5nq31I/AAAAAAAAAZA/NixKu_tbSyU/s320/Trikke+Couple.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331738984696176466"> On Saturday, May 2, 2009, after only a couple of weeks on our new Trikkes, we decided to up the ante and go on a long Trikke Trek. We started at Coon Rapids Dam and took the trails 8 miles to our friends, Tim and Jackie who live in Maple Grove. It was Jackie's birthday and so we got to personally give her our birthday greetings, have a nice visit (including a little lunch) and then head back. We fought the wind on the first leg of the trip. But going home was a breeze...at our backs.

It was a wonderful accomplishment for us and we took some fun video clips to document our trip. We really are getting addicted to this Trikking thing. Each time out we feel ourselves getting stronger and improving on our technique.

Our First Day on a Trikke

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ov8KxTqPtAc/SeqEbtLZ2xI/AAAAAAAAAYs/MB3hb12IFh4/s320/P1030281.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326215120837794578" />

Today we took a nice drive up to Crosby, Minnesota where the only Trikke dealer in the midwest is located. Our destination was Cycle Path & Paddle where we planned to pick up two Trikke T78s. The morning was beautiful down here in the Twin Cities but by the time we arrived in Crosby, it was cloudy and the temps had dropped to 38 degrees and there was still plenty of ice on the lakes in the area. It was only a couple of hour trip but what a difference it made in weather difference. By the time we got back home, the skies had cleared and the temps were back into the 60s.

Assembly of our new Trikkes took all of 15 minutes which left us all afternoon to do some serious trikking. I think we spent at least an hour carving up our neighborhood today. What a blast. I really felt like I got a good workout in spite of all the fun. If my sweating was any indication, I'd say that I lost a few pounds.

Trikking isn't like riding a bike. It is more like skiing or surfing and it is a continual challenge to improve technique and individual style. We both ended our day very happy with our new form of activitiy and glad that we made the investment. Just to prove we did this, I am embedding a short video of our experience today. Maybe it will encourage others to look into this new Trikke craze. I think we will be seeing more of these on the streets soon. We were stopped by several passers by who inquired into what this new-fangled thing was all about. I only wish that we had our own dealership. I think we could have sold a couple this afternoon.

It's Out of the Boxee!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 90px; height: 101px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ov8KxTqPtAc/SeaLttpBSQI/AAAAAAAAAYc/PlQ2eoJQkx8/s320/boxee_logo.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325097226874210562" />
I have been playing with Boxee as a media browser on my Apple TV for many months now. My initial reaction was excitement with a bit of trepidation. The thought of using a USB stick containing basically a hack piece of software and plugging it into my ATV and rebooting for installation actually made me sweat. But the install actually went smoothly and the excitement has been building ever since.

There have been a few frustrating hassles with Hulu that we all know about and a few kinks that have pretty much been worked out. But now Boxee has been released to the masses and they have added many cool features including the app box which allows you to add your favorite video and audio feeds.

I have Boxee installed on both my ATV and also my MacBook Pro. It works OK on the ATV but I have to admit that it is quite slow and sometimes frustrating. I almost took it off because of the frustratingly slow response times. The latest version is an improvement but I still have to reset my ATV from time to time. The processor is probably just not quite fast enough to work well with Boxee. The Mac Mini would probably be a perfect fit for Boxee as a media center. I'd be interested in hearing reports from others who have this arrangement.

Boxee on my MacBook is awesome. It is very responsive. I even bought a mini DVI to HDMI cable so I can hook my laptop up to the big screen TV and I use the Boxee Remote to control it. Kudos to the Boxee team for their latest iteration of this great program. I absolutely love Radio Time for our local radio and Pandora for creating my own radio stations. The Radio Time interface could stand some improvement and I imagine that will come with time.

The word is out of the Boxee. It's time to set aside your fears and jump in. This is an experience we participate in regularly with friends.

As I was doing the heat sealing of the packages tonight, I couldn't help but notice the many children excitedly filling the plastic bags with rice, soy, chicken and veggies thinking about their counterparts, somewhere in a poor land, who are anxiously waiting for a healthy meal to replace their mud pies. I felt grateful for organizations like FMSC that provide opportunities for blessed people like us to help hungry children in a poor country with no resources. I kept thinking of what Jesus said. "When you have done to the least of these, you have done it to me".

<img style="float:left; Two people that we are familiar with have had medical emergencies that landed them in the hospital. If you have ever been in this situation you know that getting the word out can be a daunting and time-consuming task when you are weak and trying to heal. Often a close friend or family member will take on the tasks of being "communications director".

CaringBridge.org is a wonderful internet site used for updating a patient's status to the outside world. Followers can check in regularly to the website to read postings and sign the guestbook to give support and encouragement.

We are now closely following the story of someone we know up in Duluth, Minnesota where our daughter and family live. It is a very heart wrenching story of a young man who had a serious skiing accident. We know the parents fairly well. Jeff (the father) is a pastor at Anchor Point an EFREE church in Duluth. Michele (the mother) is a DJ at one of the local Christian radio stations. Josh is their 18 year old son who had the accident and is now entering into the long battle of recovery. Here is a short explanation of his situation.

Sunday afternoon, March 29, high-school-senior Josh Sorvik was in a skiing accident and is now in the ICU.

Scans show his spinal cord is severely damaged, some ribs are broken, and he had a minor concussion. At this point he is paralyzed from mid-back down.

Pray for healing for Josh!

Today's journal entry was especially moving. I share it in part with you now with hopes that you will continue reading the remainder of it on the Caring Bridge site.

I must confess that today has turned out to not be one of my favorites. I can’t really tell you all of why it is so, but to a person we have all had a mini meltdown in our family. I suppose it is in part because the move to rehab makes some things very clear. Gone is the urgency and survival instinct that carries you through the ICU. Gone too is the feeling of temporariness that comes with a hospital stay. Now we are in a place that we could be for too long facing challenges that seem too big to take on. And while we are still trusting God for a miraculous healing, we can no longer avoid the hard work that rehab requires.

I think that Josh, and really all of us, are acutely aware of the challenges that loom. While we all desire to be strong, we have felt more anguish, sadness, discouragement, and fear than peace. We want the peace. . . Josh needs the peace.

Philippians 4:6-7 says:

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. NIV

I get the part about presenting our requests to God. Pleading, and presenting our requests to God has become as common as breathing. In fact, it seems that very few breaths are exhaled without being attached to a heartfelt desire for God to intervene in these dark days.

...click here to read more.

I and many others are very grateful to CaringBridge and the wonderful communication service they provide. I intend to donate to them today. Even though you may not know this family, I hope you will continue to follow their journey and hold them all in your prayers.

ADDENDUM: I just discovered that caringbridge can be followed on Twitter. fan and early alpha-tester I was excited to learn about the Boxee NYC Meetup last night. Boxee technology and Twitter allowed me to participate from my home location in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

While browsing through my Boxee interface on my Apple TV, I first noticed the new icon on the first page promoting the Boxee Meetup. So I clicked on the link and was taken to a live video feed of the event in New York City. While watching, I learned that they were using Twitter to provide live dialogue and feedback opportunities for those in attendance and those who were watching the video. Using the #boxeenyc search criteria I was able to not only watch the live video feed, but interact with those at the scene. So here I was, watching the video on my big screen driven by my Apple TV, downloading the new Boxee software update on my MacBook Pro laptop, and Twittering on my iPhone and Twittergadget on my laptop.

What a perfect demonstration of what can be done with this ever changing technology.

Exploring Social Media

Lately, I have been exploring the world of "Social Media". It all started with our family getting active on Facebook. What a wonderful place to keep up with what's happening in the lives of our children and extended family. Not to mention our life-long network of past relationships from church, work or neighbors. I am now boasting of over 200 friends and growing in my friends list. I'd have a lot more if everyone were tech savvy enough to get on. (hint, hint) ;-) It has been wonderful to follow the activities of them all.

Anyone who enjoys Facebook is bound to hear of Twitter, it's little brother. Like many experiences with Twitter that I have read about, my first impression was "This is dumb. Who'd want to do this?". After setting it aside for a few months, I took another look into it more seriously after reading some interesting articles about it's benefits. I finally am "getting it", as they say. Now you can find me on Twitter under a couple different usernames.

Seeing as you are reading this, I assume that you already know about this technology. That's probably how you got here. Possibly from a recent tweet of mine with a link. So, I am not going to waste your time with stuff you already know about. What I will share with you, is how I am using other wonderful FREE services to enhance my presentation on the internet. One of my favorite supporting websites is drop.io, The URL for our drop.io site is http://drop.io/denmarjo
Here we can post photos, movies, music, documents, links and pretty much anything. The free account limits you to 100 megabytes. They provide you with a voice mail number, conference call number, fax services, and even live chat. The entire site can be used for real-time collaboration. It's just the coolest thing I have found in a long time. You really should look into it. As you can see, it can be customized much like your Twitter page.

I would say that of all the social web services available, Facebook, Twitter, drop.io and Blogger are among my favorites at the moment. However, I have recently become a Boxee fan and am exploring that venue as a social media tool. More on Boxee and many others in future posts. This was more as an intro to how I got into the social media scene.

Social Media is a fascinating new trend in our society which is changing the game...big time. I won't be left behind. Hope you are enjoying the journey, too. Follow us on Twitter! if you aren't already.

Honor One Another

My wife and I have been married for 35 years now. The secret to our happy relationship is found in something a rabbi named Paul wrote a couple thousand years ago. He said that we should "outdo one another in showing honor". Mary Joyce wrote about our little secret in a song titled "Honor One Another". This principle works for anyone who will apply it in their relationships. We hope you will enjoy this song and even dance to it as you whisper sweet honoring words in each other's ear. Click on this article title to go to the download page. We began to think seriously about putting it all together in a recording called Family Matters. At the time we had no song with that title so I said to Mary Joyce, "What don't you just write one and we can make that the title song for the album". Well a couple of days later, I came home from work and she informed me that she had written one. She sat and the piano and started to play and sing. Tears began to run down my cheeks. It was so beautiful and a perfect song for what our lives were about. We share this song with you here. We hope you will be blessed and challenged by it's simplicity. There is more where this comes from. Come back soon!
